Why You Need a Weighted Blanket in Your Life?

The Craze Behind Weighted Blankets

For years, many people did not know that weighted blankets existed, and those who did - had to choose from a very limited and expensive selection...until now! The gossip and whispers about this hefty bedding gave way to what is now a ton of media coverage.

It started with celebrities who raved about weighted blankets, retail stores nationwide began selling variations of the heavy sheets, and by the end of 2018,  weighted blankets were on practically every gift guide on the internet.

For decades, weighted blankets were used by a small community to treat children with autism and adults with PTSD and other conditions. The blankets purportedly work by using deep-pressure therapy – similar to the comfort created by swaddling babies or getting deep-tissue massages – to create more restful sleep. Read how Rebecca from my Winter short story series, Love Paints the Way has a weighted and cozy throw on her mind as the first thing she wanted to do after coming home from a long day:

"When she finished, the steamy bathroom made it hard for her to see. She heard the front door slam and her parents talking. She was thankful they were home.

The storm had picked up even more, along with the winds. The power began flickering. Jack had installed a brand new generator a few winters before and it came in handy for storms like this one.

Rebecca dressed in some comfortable clothes and went downstairs to make  tea. Christmas movies were surely on and all she wanted to do was relax by a fire, put a heavy throw over her shoulders and watch them. There is nothing more soothing than the feeling of being hugged by a cozy throw! Her parents were in the kitchen, looking just as tired as she was."

"The pressure a weighted blanket provides when someone is trying to relax into sleep can be comforting," said Dr. Lynelle Schneeberg, a behavioral sleep psychologist who is a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. "People like the feeling of getting a hug or a massage. Sleeping under a weighted blanket provides a similar feeling."

And as a mama of a 4-year-old who has Sensory Processing Disorder and a survivor of complex trauma - weighted blankets are a MUST in this Hygge living family!

This morning over on my Youtube - I got real about the major meltdown my 4-year-old had and how cozy heavy-knit throws and her weighted blanket can stop almost instantly help calm her. Children in general cannot be "logical" when upset and to tell them to "relax" does nothing. Sometimes, we need to step away if they are really screaming - but I try to intervene with body support first and it always seems to work.

And let me bring you in on a little secret - it works for adults too! Even though adults can be more logical and talk their way through a meltdown of their own, we too, thrive off the coziness and feeling of security that weighted blankets and throws can give!

Here are five main benefits of a weighted blanket:

  1. They have a calming effect, like a deep pressure massage and this helps to release dopamine and serotonin - a.k.a the "feel good" hormones.
  2. They feel like you are getting a hug! Who doesn't like hugs?
  3. They ease anxiety.
  4. They improve sleep - keeping you sleeping deeper and longer.
  5. They come in different sizes and weight.

Everyone can enjoy the benefits of a weighted blanket!

Cozy 'Hygge' Throws

While my daughter is enjoying her pink weighted blanket in the above picture - for me personally, I also like the heavy knit, cozy throws to read a book with and enjoy a warm beverage. Throw on a fire and I am in bliss! I have even been using my knit throw while I put together next month's issue of Simply Be Magazine because here in Connecticut - it is FREEZING this time of year!

Make sure to check out the video above on how we use weighted blankets for our daughter even when we are not sleeping!
